HEMI Lifter and Camshaft Concerns

Certain HEMI applications may develop lifter or camshaft wear, including problems involving cylinder-deactivation lifters on engines equipped with MDS.

Possible warning signs include a persistent metallic tick, cylinder-specific misfire, rough idle, reduced power, a flashing check engine light, or metal debris in the oil.

If a lifter no longer follows the camshaft correctly, continued operation may damage the cam lobe and create additional internal wear. However, an exhaust manifold leak, broken manifold fastener, worn rocker component, injector noise, ignition failure, or low oil condition can sound similar.

Because HEMI valvetrain repair can require substantial disassembly, we confirm the mechanical failure and affected cylinder before recommending major engine work.


HEMI Exhaust Manifold Tick

A HEMI exhaust manifold leak may create a sharp ticking sound that is most noticeable during a cold start and becomes quieter as the engine warms.

Heat cycles can affect exhaust-manifold sealing, fasteners, and nearby components. The noise may resemble a lifter or valvetrain problem even though it originates outside the engine.

A cold-start tick should be evaluated for exhaust leakage, fastener condition, sound location, misfire data, oil pressure, and valvetrain operation.

Separating an exhaust leak from an internal engine noise can prevent unnecessary engine disassembly.


Dodge Pentastar V6 Oil Leaks

Many Dodge Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey, Charger, Challenger, and other models use the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.

One area we inspect carefully is the oil-filter housing and oil-cooler assembly located near the center of the engine. Depending on the application and failure, oil or coolant may collect in the engine valley and then travel down the transmission, engine block, or underbody.

The visible drip may appear far from the original leak.

Other possible leak sources include valve covers, timing covers, oil pans, crankshaft seals, cooling-system connections, and related sealing surfaces.

Pentastar Ticking and Rocker-Arm Concerns

A Pentastar tick does not automatically prove that the camshaft is damaged.

The correct Chrysler-specified fluid is important. A universal fluid should not be used simply because it is marketed as compatible with multiple transmissions.

A fluid service may help maintain a serviceable transmission, but it cannot repair confirmed clutch, bearing, valve-body, or internal damage.
