Honda Maintenance Minder Part 2: Why Codes 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Depend on Your Honda
You figured out how to read your Honda Maintenance Minder code.
Now comes the more important question:
What does that code mean for your Honda?
In Part 1, we broke combinations such as A1, B16 and A137 into separate instructions.
Part 2 goes a step deeper.
Codes 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 can point to transmission, engine, cooling-system, drivetrain and brake-fluid maintenance. But the same number does not always lead to an identical service on every Honda.
A CR-V, Civic, Pilot, Passport, Odyssey and Ridgeline can have different engines, transmissions and drivetrains.
That’s why we don’t expect you to figure out which maintenance chart applies.
We’ll check your exact year and model and determine what Honda calls for.
If service records are available, we’ll review those too so we’re not recommending maintenance that has already been properly completed.
First, What Does Honda B Service Actually Include?
In Part 1, we kept this deliberately simple:
B = engine oil and oil filter service plus Honda’s specified inspection items.
Now let’s look at what that inspection actually means.
On current U.S.-market Hondas such as the CR-V and Pilot, Honda’s B service includes oil and filter service plus inspection of:
- front and rear brakes
- tie-rod ends, steering components and boots
- suspension components
- driveshaft boots
- brake hoses and lines
- fluid levels and fluid condition
- exhaust system
- fuel lines and connections
Honda’s current Maintenance Minder information lists these items as part of the B-service inspection.
The important word is inspect.
A B service doesn’t mean automatically replacing every part on that list.
We inspect those areas, look at the vehicle’s condition and service history, and explain what we find.
Some things may need attention now.
Some may be perfectly fine.
Others may be worth planning for later.
That’s a much more useful approach than treating “B” as a giant package where everything gets replaced whether it needs it or not.
What Does Honda Maintenance Minder Code 3 Mean?
At its simplest:
Code 3 = Transmission Fluid Maintenance
But this is our first good example of why the exact Honda matters.
On a current CR-V, Honda lists code 3 as transmission-fluid replacement.
On a current Pilot, Honda lists transmission fluid and transfer fluid where applicable under code 3.
So two drivers can both say:
“My Honda shows code 3.”
That doesn’t automatically mean both vehicles receive an identical drivetrain service.
The transmission and drivetrain configuration matter.
And you don’t need to figure that out before scheduling.
We’ll check your exact year and model and determine what Honda specifies for yours.
Honda also notes that certain operating conditions can shorten transmission fluid intervals on applicable models. Again, that’s something we check against the correct vehicle information rather than asking the owner to interpret a chart.
Code 4 Is Where the Exact Honda Really Matters
If there is one section that explains why Part 2 needed to exist, this is it.
Code 4 does not mean exactly the same maintenance on every Honda.
For a current CR-V, Honda lists code 4 as:
Replace spark plugs
and
Inspect valve clearance
For a current Pilot, Honda’s code 4 includes:
Replace spark plugs
Replace the timing belt
and
Inspect the water pump
Those are significantly different maintenance requirements under the same number.
That’s why a question such as:
“How much does Honda code 4 cost?”
doesn’t have one useful answer until we know which Honda we’re talking about.
A CR-V showing code 4 and a Pilot showing code 4 can require very different work.
You shouldn’t have to know whether your engine uses a timing belt or what type of valve train it has.

What Does Honda Code 5 Mean?
This one is more straightforward.
Code 5 = Engine Coolant Replacement
Honda’s current CR-V and Pilot Maintenance Minder information both identify code 5 as engine-coolant replacement.
Even with a relatively simple code, service history still matters.
If the cooling-system service was properly completed recently, we don’t want to recommend it again just because someone isn’t sure what happened during a previous visit.
We’ll check the exact Honda and whatever maintenance history is available before recommending the service.
Why Does Honda Code 6 Depend on the Drivetrain?
Code 6 = Rear Differential Fluid Where Equipped
That last part matters.
A front-wheel-drive Honda without a rear differential obviously doesn’t require rear-differential fluid service.
An AWD Honda may.
Honda’s current CR-V and Pilot Maintenance Minder information lists code 6 for rear-differential fluid on applicable configurations.
This is why we don’t want Honda owners trying to diagnose the maintenance chart themselves.
You don’t need to know the technical details of your AWD system.
We’ll check your exact year and model and determine whether code 6 applies to your Honda’s drivetrain.
Honda also gives additional differential-fluid guidance for some vehicles used regularly under demanding conditions such as trailer towing or sustained low-speed mountainous driving. That is another reason we use the correct vehicle information instead of one universal mileage recommendation.
What Does Honda Maintenance Minder Code 7 Mean?
On many newer Hondas:
Code 7 = Brake Fluid Replacement
Current CR-V and Pilot Maintenance Minder information both use code 7 for brake fluid.
Honda also says that if the code 7 reminder doesn’t appear within 36 months after the item was last reset, brake fluid should still be replaced every three years.
But here’s another reason model year matters.
Some older Honda owner’s manuals specified brake-fluid replacement every three years independently of the Maintenance Minder display rather than using the newer code 7 approach.
So if an older Honda doesn’t display a 7, that doesn’t automatically mean brake fluid has no maintenance requirement.
Once again:
We’ll check your exact year and model.
You don’t need to determine whether your Honda uses the newer code 7 system or an older time-based maintenance instruction.
One Code, Different Honda: That’s the Point
Here’s the simplest way to remember Part 2.
3 points us toward transmission and applicable drivetrain-fluid maintenance.
4 points toward spark plugs and engine-specific maintenance.
5 is engine coolant.
6 applies to rear-differential fluid where equipped.
7 is brake fluid on applicable Maintenance Minder systems.
And B tells us to perform oil/filter service plus a broader Honda-specified inspection.
But a code is still only part of the maintenance decision.
We combine:
the code showing on the dash
with
the exact year and model
Honda’s applicable maintenance information
the available service history
and
what we actually find during inspection.
That’s how we decide what is due now and what can be planned for later.

Honda Maintenance Minder FAQ
Is Honda B service just an oil change?
No. B includes engine oil and filter service plus Honda’s specified inspection items, including brakes, steering and suspension components, fluid condition and several other areas of the vehicle.
Does Honda code 4 always mean a timing belt?
No. A current CR-V uses code 4 for spark plugs and valve-clearance inspection, while a current Pilot includes spark plugs, timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection. We’ll check your exact year and model before recommending service.
Does code 3 always mean the same transmission service?
No. Code 3 commonly includes transmission-fluid service, but some Honda configurations can also include transfer-fluid maintenance. The exact vehicle matters.
Does every Honda have code 6?
No. Code 6 is associated with rear-differential fluid where equipped. A Honda without an applicable rear differential doesn’t get rear-differential service simply because another Honda does.
What if my older Honda doesn’t show code 7?
Honda’s brake-fluid maintenance approach has varied over time. Some older manuals specified three-year brake-fluid replacement independently of Maintenance Minder. We’ll check the exact year and model instead of applying a newer code chart to an older Honda.
